Chocolate Gravy

What do you do when you need to go buy groceries and stock your pantry but you are trying to stretch it out to last until the weekend?

Well I start looking at what I do have and think it through and make the best of it. The rest of the week is going to be interesting. Maybe I’ll have to share what's on our dinner table the rest of the week!  Or maybe not.  :)

Chocolate gravy and toast was on the menu for supper last night. It’s a recipe I wrote down in my little handwritten recipe book that I prepared when I married and left home because I always loved it.

Most of the time, when we have it, it’s for breakfast occasionally on Saturday mornings, but every once in awhile, it will serve as dinner for us, like last night. It’s really good with biscuits too, but toast works just as well. I actually like toast better with it. You just dip your toast and spoon up the rest. Yummy!

Luke set the table for me.  But remember, we're very simple people, no fancy dinner table here!

Luke was my helper last night. He especially loves it! Colt always loved it and would sometimes ask me to make it for lunch. Obviously, I wouldn’t make it every day because I don’t want kids bouncing off the walls, but we do enjoy it occasionally. As a matter of fact, we had it for breakfast one morning while we were out of town this past week in Alabama at my brother’s house.

But I do have to ask, because I know when we have company, not everyone is familiar with it. They either really love it or really don’t. So, is this just a southern thing or a certain-family-thing? Do you make chocolate gravy? Or have you even heard of it? I know we have relatives from Indiana that do make it but with milk. I use water and my recipe is one that’s passed down from my mom, so it’s kind of general in describing the amounts of ingredients, but I’ll share it. If you’ve never tried it and you give it a try, I’d love to hear what you think! I think you’ll either be hooked or think it’s too rich!

**Note** I usually double what you see here for sure if I have company and sometimes triple it. I would say this recipe below would feed 3 people, maybe 4 if everyone eats only one serving. Remember, it IS rich!

Chocolate Gravy

Put a scoop of sugar (you know one of those Tupperware scoops) in a stewer pan on top of the stove.  I just measured what a scoop was equal to and it came to 2/3 a cup, just in case you don't have one of these handy scoops!  Gasp!  :)

Add 2 Tbsp of flour (heaping)

Add 2 Tbsp of cocoa (leveled off – not heaping or it’s too bitter)

Stir the above dry ingredients until mixed thoroughly.

Add approximately 1 ¼ - 1 ½ cups of water.

Cook on top of the stove on medium heat stirring constantly to make sure it doesn’t stick. It will gradually thicken as you stir. A medium consistency is best…..not too runny…..not too thick. When it’s the right consistency, add a chunk of butter and stir in. Butter just makes it all the more yummy!

And it’s ready to go! Yummy! Be sure and add butter to the table because it’s even better with more butter added, but I usually leave that to the individual as to how much is personally preferred.

Enjoy!  :)

We love Chocolate Gravy on biscuits! My Mother in law use to make this all the time, so when she got to the point where she couldn't make it, I had to find a recipe for it. I make mine with milk, if we are out, I'll use water.

Hey Tammy! nope, I've never even heard of it either - however, my husband's mother makes Chocolate syrup for pancakes - not sure how she makes it though - It definitely sounds delish and we'll give it a try. Can't go wrong with butter and chocolate!

Your recipe for chocolate gravy is a lot like the one I use. I had never had chocolate gravy until it was served for breakfast at a slumber party for a friend of mine when I was about 10. Her mom had made a large pan and made some yeast biscuits to go with it. I was hooked at first bite. It was hard to take that first bite though. It sounded so gross at first. My kids always wanted it for their "birthday breakfast". I haven't made it yet for my grandchildren. I don't want them bouncing off the walls yet! Ha!
