♥ Simple and Rustic ♥

Sometimes I think my brain is in overload.  I have plans, ideas, and just everything else that's there waiting to be addressed or brought to life and it really bugs me when I can't get to them.  One of those things has been getting the bedroom we remodeled decorated.  I've collected a few things but being somewhat of a perfectionist about stuff like that and thinking I'd rather wait and do nothing until I have what I want or need, I tend to procrastinate on getting what I do have up or out.

But......I did go ahead and hang the twiggy star wreath over the bed and I have to say that I just love that simple rustic look!  Things are definitely coming together.  Jason made me a pegboard and that old ladder has been painted and we're going to distress it.  So there will be more to come later, but for now........here's how the wreath looks above the bed.....

And I made another stop by the Antique Gallery the other day and came home with these goodies.  I can't wait for Luke to be able to read that book..........I just love old books!  Not sure yet where the jar with the red lid will go.  I have so much red everywhere that it could fit in so many places, so we'll have to see about that.  The basket is going to go in the bedroom most likely.

Anywhere I just had to share a little bit.  :)  Thanks so much for stopping by!  And if I haven't been by to visit much lately, please don't give up on me......I will!

Have a great day!  :)

♥ Thrift Shop Finds ♥

My mom, the kids, and I spent the day Tuesday at the antique gallery and thrift shopping.  My niece, Laci, is here with us this week so she went also.  Everyone that came along loves thrift shops and the antique gallery......... except Luke.  He told me he wished they would knock down the antique gallery and make it into a Walmart.  :)  I really think it's because I make him ride in a cart because I'm always afraid he'll bump into something and break it. I'm going to have work on making him a collector of something so he'll enjoy it too.  :)

Between the antique gallery and the thrift shop, here's what I came home with:

The chair was the big find of the day for only $3!  It has an H engraved in it, but I will just pretend it stands for "Home" and I will probably fold a quilt or homespun over it anyway.  This will go in the bedroom that I'm decorating.  Slowly, that bedroom is coming together....at least in my mind's eye it is.  When I have everything I need, I'll get to work on putting it all out and on the walls.

The oversized twig basket excited me too!  I love baskets and twiggy things and this was both.  I'm not sure yet where this will land, but it was definitely coming home with me for $10.  And the faux potted flowers will probably go in the Cedar Loft....not sure on that yet either, but it was only $2, so I couldn't pass it up either.

I might just hit some yard sales in the morning.  :)  I've got thrifting fever this week!

Thanks for stopping by today!  Hope you're having a great summer!  :)

♥ Collecting for Decorating ♥

Oh to be able to just go on a shopping spree to get everything at one time that I need to decorate a room.....what a luxury that would be!  :)  But then I guess part of the fun is the hunt for that special thing..........which also gives me time to afford each one.

I've been slowly collecting things to decorate the bedroom that we just worked on remodeling in March and April.

Everything I've gotten so far has come from thrift stores and flea markets/antique malls except for the twiggy star, which came from Etsy.

Found this ladder at the Antique Gallery too.  :)

I've still got a few things in mind that I'm waiting on and something I want Jason to make for me for that room.

I'll be excited to share the decorated room when I'm finished with the collecting (just a little more) and the decorating!

And I'm so behind on my blog visiting...please don't give up on me if you haven't seen me around lately....I'll be by soon!

Thank YOU so much for stopping by!  Have a wonderful day!  :)

♥ Goodies ♥

I know many of you are fortunate enough to have wonderful primitive shops near by (especially those in the New England states) because I’m always drooling over the charming stores, but we really have nothing of that sort here. The closest I really get to great finds of the primitive sort (besides yard sales) is the antique gallery, which is a really a mix of antiques and a flea-market type atmosphere with lots of vendor booths. I always look forward to stopping in there when we’re in that area. It’s about a 45 minute drive from here.

I thought I’d share my latest finds. I already shared in another post what my mom (and dad) gave me for my birthday………the stone crock and the butter paddle that I picked out at the antique gallery. Well here are a few other things I’ve picked up within the last month or so.

I have to admit that I have a thing about baskets. They don’t have to be a particular kind. I just know one that I like when I see it.

This one is a caddy type basket, which I am using in my kitchen.

I liked the color, shape and sturdiness of this basket. Right now, it’s holding my Country Sampler magazines near the fireside chair. It’s one of those that will probably serve multi purposes for me though.

The crock in the picture below was marked down. I got it for $9.  Oh how I love crocks……and if they’re a little chipped, it’s all the better! I really love the solid brown ones!

And you know how I love stars. I picked up this one for my upstairs bathroom for $3. I’m almost ready to share that bathroom. When I get my new fixture in there, I’ll share some photos of it.

And this chenille pumpkin caught my eye and it had to come home with me. I think I paid $10 for it. Isn’t it cute?

And this basket, I picked up at Goodwill for 99 cents.  Baskets just make wonderful little organizers that look great.  Not sure what I'm going to do with this one, but I'll figure something out.  But for 99 cents it had to come home with me.  :)

Speaking of pumpkins, I did my interior fall decorating Monday evening. Luke was my little helper.   I’ll share that on another post later this week.

And then yesterday (Wednesday) I received the giveaway package in the mail from Sandi (of The Primitive Skate)!   I won her birthday/fall giveaway.  I was a little kid at Christmas when the mail lady honked.  She only does that when we have something that won't fit in our mailbox, so I knew that meant a package!  Just look at all of those fall goodies!

And Sandi made everything (except the candle and soap that is).  Those fall blocks are so darling!  Those just might be my favorite.....or could it be the scarecrow or the pumpkin.  Gosh, I don't know.......I just loved everything!  Thank you so much Sandi!  :)

I went right to work adding them to my fall decor.

The candle is called Spice Cake and it smells heavenly!   It arrived just in time for my piano lessons, so the house smelled so good when everyone came!

Oh and Sandi was so sweet.......she included a little package for Luke.  Of course, it didn't take him long to tear into it and boy did she know what he loves.......Bob the Builder books!  I think that smile says it all, but Luke says "thank you" ,Ms. Sandi!    I think we'll be reading Bob the Builder books to him for awhile now!  :)  And it won't be long until he'll be reading them on his own as he's very anxious to learn to read.

I'll be back on Saturday to share where I put my fall goodies from Sandi and the rest of the fall decor!

Tomorrow is Faithful Friday time! I hope you’ll stop by.  Joy and I also invite you to join us with a post to link up!

Thank you for stopping by today!  :)

♥ A Busy Week ♥

We’ve had a busy week! Monday marked the first day of our homeschooling year! Actually, we “eased” into schooling, as I call it. I decided it would be best to get Joy started and on a routine again before I began working with Luke. I think it was a wise decision. You know how it goes, there are always interruptions and getting into the schooling groove again after a leisurely summer always takes a bit of discipline, especially staying away from the computer. So please don’t think I’ve abandoned you if I don’t get around to visit right away. I’m trying to find my groove and best way to do it all.

The day our box of Sonlight books arrives is an exciting day. It’s like Christmas! We are always anxious to see where our reading adventures will take us…..including read alouds as well as independent reading. I wouldn’t miss reading aloud for anything! It’s my favorite part of homeschooling! The books you see here make up Joy’s History, Literature, Bible, and Spelling curriculum. (The rest comes from different companies and were already waiting for us on the bookshelf).

Luke catches on to the enthusiasm when books arrive. He has been asking all summer if I was ordering his school work! He has learned so much informally all summer already. But we are going to tackle beginning to read and since we make a big deal out of books and being able to read, he’s pretty excited!

This picture was taken on Joy’s first day, Monday.   I'm likely to find her reading in the strangest of places. :)  I would think sitting down would be more comfortable?

And as you can see in the background, we still have a mess from the staircase project!  Leave it to us to start a project right at school time!

While Joy and I were working together, Luke played on the iPad. Do you see what he’s eating?

Let's take a closer look......

Yep, that’s chopped onions, folks! He had just helped me prepare lunch and we had left over onions.  When he found out there were some left, he asked for them………and he ate just about every one of them too.

Thank you all so much for the birthday wishes on Tuesday! I have to say that I had a very nice birthday! And all of your comments……well……they really topped it off! Thank you so much!

After our morning of school, my mom and I, and the kids, went to the antique gallery where she told me to pick out something for my birthday (on a budgeted amount of course). That was fun because so many times I put off buying because I talk myself out of buying because I “don’t need it” right now. But it’s fun to be able to pick something out and bring it home! We were all laughing at the check-out register because I remarked that not many folks would want for their birthday what I picked out for my birthday.

I loved them both though!  And I came home and immediately found them a new home.

And then for dinner that night, we went out for Mexican food at my favorite Mexican restaurant. It was all of our family including Colt and Amber and my mom and dad. Between Jason and all the kids, I got 4 CDs which included two from TobyMac, one of Mandisa and one of Tenth Avenue North, a DVD called Monumental by Kirk Cameron, and some butterscotch maple cream tarts. Oh, and Luke wrapped up an old ID chain he found all by himself and made me a card from a piece of typing paper and had it taped over closed. He was quite proud of all the letters he made including the letters LOVE……….and so was I. :)

It was a good day! I’m so thankful for the blessing of another year.

Oh, and my cake! Oh…..my cake! I requested this cake. My mom made it.  She makes it often and I make it from time to time.  It’s my favorite!  We shared some with the server and cooks at the restaurant and I still had some left to bring home.  It only lasted one day though.  It's long gone now.

I had a cute helper blowing out the candles.

I’ll come back and share the very simple but delicious strawberry cake recipe tomorrow along with Faithful Friday (by the way, we’d love for you to join us for Faithful Friday too)!

Thank you so much for stopping by today! Have a great day!  :)

A Good Day at the Antique Gallery!

The Antique Gallery is one of my all-time favorite places to shop for my home.  I could stay in there for hours! Primitive and Country shops are few and far between in this area, but there are several booths in the Antique Gallery that I especially love.....and then some that occasionally surprise me with a great find.

On my last visit, something red caught my eye.  It's my favorite color so I already knew that red would be (at least) an accent color in The Cedar Loft (the backyard apartment/pool house).  So, when I saw this red clawfoot table and chairs, I knew it would look great in there.  I just wasn't sure if the space could handle a 48" table.  I quickly called Jason and he said it would work fine.  My heart did a little flip.   :)  And since it's important to me that Jason and I are in agreement on "big" purchases like this, even though he does leave the decorating to me for the most part, I still wanted to know what he thought of it, so I quickly sent him a picture via the cellphone.  He gave it his stamp of approval, so it became ours!  And for $250!  Since we're not ready for it just yet, they're keeping it at the Antique Gallery for us until we can bring it home.

This picture of it (still at the booth) was taken with my cellphone (I should have learned by now to take my camera with me to The Antique Gallery).  It's not the best quality, but here it is:

There has also been a red plaid/checked couch at The Antique Gallery for quite awhile that I've always admired.  This particular day, there was a sale which gave the couch a very attractive price tag of $112!  After a trip back over there for Jason to see it later, we also claimed it for The Cedar Loft!

Sorry for the poor quality....taken with my cell phone.

As The Cedar Loft is progressing, I can envision the red dining table and the red couch in their spots.  It's a very open plan and will all flow together.  It's exciting to see it all coming together!

Another bonus.....I couldn't pass this up either - a quilt!  And after 60% off, only $60!  This will be on the bed in The Cedar Loft too.  Notice it has that punch of red too?

Anyone know what this pattern is called?

It was one of those days when it just all came together.  I loved them; Jason approved; And now we have our inspiration pieces!

Oh, and these items came home with me as well:

The bee skep has a new home on the sunporch.

The grater and the sifter have a home in my kitchen.

And this, well I had to have it for the bar in The Cedar Loft, just because it was the exact same red color as the table and chairs (from the same booth).  I'm thinking I will replace the glass dome with a shoo-fly screen.

Before you think, wow, what a spender, let me just plug in here that this was definitely not a typical shopping visit (for me) to The Antique Gallery.  A typical shopping day mostly consists of "window shopping" and perhaps a small item or two comes home with me.  And I'm always excited about those too (things like the bee skep or sifter).  So that's why this day was especially exciting!

Thank you so much for stopping by today!  :)

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait....

I have a philosophy when it comes to purchases or decorating my home.  If I can't figure out exactly what I want where or if I can't find or afford what I really want, I wait.  I'd rather have nothing or do nothing until I know what I want or find what "speaks to me", or can afford to get what I want.  Actually it's kind of exciting know that it will happen one day.....I will find exactly what I want or be able to purchase just the right thing for the spot!

That's why my kitchen cabinets have had nothing above them since we remodeled our kitchen.  Nothing I happen to think of just makes me jump up and down.  I think I have an idea now, but it hasn't been until recently that I thought of what I'd like there.  It will take awhile to get it to that point though.  So there we go again with waiting.  But that's okay.

One big thing I've waited on concerns living room furniture.  We've had our living room furniture since 1990!  Maybe I shouldn't tell that....I guess it's kind of embarrassing.  It's been through life with all my kids.   But.....what I want I can't afford, or put it this way.....it's not #1 on our priority list.   There are always other things that come up that have to come first.   I LOVE Johnston Benchworks furniture, but I would also settle for used furniture with the right bones to have re-upholstered in the prim fabrics that I love.   I'm always on the look-out for a good deal on either of the above options.

That's why I was so excited to find my newest purchase at the antique gallery that Joy and I frequent.  I passed by one particular booth and saw "it".  It was a blue chair and it was a fabric pattern that I loved!

I figured it would be way out of my price range, but imagine my surprise to find a price tag of $90 on it!  I was thrilled!  I came home and presented my case to Jason.  He said yes.  I decided that when I went back, if it was still there, it was meant to be and if it was gone, not meant to be.  I was really really happy to find it still waiting (for me).   :)

I'm not really comfortable with haggling on prices, but I thought it was worth a try to just ask.  I mean, all they could do is say no, right?  So I asked if the owner of that booth would take any less for the chair (actually I thought the price was already reasonable and I was getting it anyway), but I had to ask.  The clerk asked me to make an offer.  I didn't know what to say, so she suggested I offer $75.  So I did.  She called the owner and when it was said and done, I got it for 10% off, $81!  Even better than $90!

My intentions were that it would eventually end up in my living room, but for now it would probably go in my bedroom.  I had just the spot for it there.   I would wait until I had the rest of my furniture (that I'm still sort of patiently waiting on) before I put it in the living room.  However, when I got it home and put it in the living room in this corner, I knew it had to stay.  I love it there.  Actually, I love that entire corner!

When the Christmas tree goes up, it will have to be moved to our bedroom for the Christmas season, but it will then be moved back. You know how everything always looks bare after Christmas decor comes down?  Well, now I'll have my chair to look forward to and it won't be so bare!  I love it!

Good things really do come to those who wait.......so now I'm waiting on the rest of it!  :)

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue....

Did you think someone was getting married? Sorry, I just had to use that title for today's post.....it somehow fit! :)

I've been eyeing this bench for awhile now thinking that it needs help! It is in my foyer. The way our house is designed, you walk right in the front door into the foyer which is all open and steps down into the living room, which you know is decorated prim Americana. The colors in there are beige, navy, red, and colonial blue. I've had this bench for a long, long time. I really like all of Rondell's blue (and the blue cupboard Jason made my mom that I had to give up), and was thinking that I just might give it a coat of colonial blue paint. There are quite a few hearts on there, so I'm not sure what I'll do with those. They may just have to stay. What do you think, should I paint it blue? And if you have any great ideas for the hearts, I'd love to hear it! That's "the old" for today's post.

Now for the new. When I went to the antique gallery and bought the little bench that I ended up putting on the hearth of the fireplace, I also picked up this picture. I kept walking by it and being drawn to it. When I looked on the descriptive tag, it said, "Colonial Picture". No wonder it caught my eye. I just loved the people in it and the colors and I could just imagine all sorts of history when I looked at it. Well the last time I walked by and looked at it, the owner of that booth happened to be in there and she said if I wanted that picture, I could have it at 20% off, so I had to bring it home. I got it for $9.40. I ended up hanging it on the little wall between my staircase and hallway. I decided to just let it stand alone (for now anyway). I'm trying to decide whether to paint the frame or not....what do you think.....the same dark navy that my long shelf is behind the couch....colonial blue....or leave it alone? That's "the new". Well it's new to me!

Now for "the borrowed". The borrowed started off as borrowed from my mom's house and ended up in a trade. I traded her a bunny decked out in a blue and yellow dress for this crock. I added it to the foyer. It is straight ahead as you walk through the front door.

And finally, my "something blue" doesn't have anything to do with decorating (well I guess contemplating painting the bench blue could fit that bill), this one is about Joy. Monday night she tested for her blue belt in taekwondo. Testing had been scheduled for the day we had Super Saturday VBS, so they arranged a special testing for her and this was it. Here she is during testing (with her green belt still). It's so hot these days inside the building, that they are allowing them to just wear a T-shirt instead of the entire uniform.

And Ms. Jane presenting Joy with her blue belt. They always put the old belt around their neck. Can you tell by that smile how happy she was to move on to blue?

She's been white, yellow, orange, green, and now blue. The hardest (and longest to achieve) are still yet to come.....purple, brown, red, and black.

**********************************************************************************

I hope you're all staying cool! It is super hot here today! I'm so thankful for air conditioning! Have a great Thursday, everyone! :)

Goodwill Makeovers, Awards, and a Giveaway

This weekend and into Monday, I worked on a couple of my Goodwill finds. I had many more in the pile but just didn't make it to them yet. So they still sit in a corner of my dining room patiently waiting. I will feel like I would have so many "new" prim goodies if I can ever find time to get to them!

Here's what I did get done:

Remember the wooden bowl I picked up for $5 at a flea market that had the fruit inside.....

Here it is now. I plan to put dried pears in it (when they arrive).

And this wooden box was also a Goodwill find (shown here with the rolling pin and basket).

It will most likely have a home on the back of the toilet when we redo our bathroom, which is our next home improvement project (just waiting for that tax refund check). As a matter of fact, I took a picture of it here in the bathroom so you could see what a nice fit it is for the back of a toilet. (Is it proper to be saying "toilet" on here?)

I know it doesn't match now, but before long, it will be right at home there. I will probably put some soaps with prim labels.....still on the lookout for just the right things for that. I'll be sure and show you when it's filled.

Can you tell I am still in love with my barn red/burgundy, distressed of course (with antiquing glaze). I think I will never tire of it! Red just makes me happy!

Next today, I'd like to thank Amber,Joy, and Gigi for the Berry Sweet Award. It was "berry" sweet of you to think of me! (I always find it so hard to pick people as I've said before, so I invite anyone that would like to display it on their blog to do so, as my gift to you too).

Amber also just presented me with the Sisterhood Award as well. Amber is the daughter of Karen of Homespun Simplicity. She is a sweet girl and I know we are sisters in Christ too!

Anne of Seasons of the Past, is having a wonderful Spring Renewal Giveaway. Just look at what all is included! If you would like to be included in this giveaway, click over and enter today for this giveaway in April! (But I really want to give these goodies a home here)! :)

**********************************************************************************

If you haven't "seen" me awhile on your blog, please don't give up on me! It's been a very busy last couple of weeks. We don't have to go to dance class tonight (it's their spring break), so I really hope to sit down with my laptop and stop by for visits. Thanks so much for all your visits and comments! I love reading them so much! :)

Goodwill Finds, A New (Different) Computer & Shelley's Giveaway

Tuesday night while Joy was in dance class, I stopped in Goodwill. I have a regular route through there, scanning the tops of the shelves, usually ending in the books. This time, believe it or not, I didn't find any books. That's very rare. But here's what I did find for a total of $7.00.

I will add the rolling pin to my collection in a crock in my kitchen. I'm not quite sure what I will do with the little Americana basket. I can picture it for sure being used in the summer for get-togethers with silverware tucked inside. But I'll find a place for it's everyday use probably somewhere in my Prim/Americana living room or foyer. I can never pass up a cutting board. This one was a little smaller and just the size to hang in a little wall space between my kitchen countertops and the cabinets. Of course, it will be painted and primmed. And the last thing I picked up there was this little wooden box. I passed it up last week and wished that I had gotten it after I came home. I picture it painted and primmed and on the back of the toilet in the bathroom with prims toiletries tucked inside. I'm brainstorming on that one! But I was tickled to find it still there from last week. It was only 99 cents.

Then I had a few more minutes before the antique gallery/flea market closed, so I made a quick run through there. I found this old wooden bowl for $5. The fruit painted inside has definitely got to go. I hope to have a great prim bowl when I'm finished with it! I was excited to find this because I love wooden bowls. Although I'd love to have true antique bowls, I really can't swing the price tag for them, so I'm fine with reproductions or makeovers!

Second of all I thought I'd update you all on my computer woes! First let me say, I am still a fan of Dell Computers, as every other computer in our home is a Dell...Jason's work computer, Colt's new one, Joy's (Colt's old one), and our desktop. However, that being said, my red Studio 17 Dell had a hard drive problem with in a week after I had it. We took it back to the Geek Squad. They gave us a new one. The second red Studio 17 did the same thing...hard drive problem within a couple of weeks. At this point, I was getting a little skiddish about getting another one. While Jason was waiting in line again at the Geek Squad, another person was in line with the same problem, returning their's also. So, this time, he brought home an HP.

Although I really did love my red computer, I do love this one. It is a 16" screen, instead of 17" and it is black. It is a little easier to cart around and is very sturdy. So far, no problems. Wish me luck. I'm beginning to get a complex about me and computers! :)

And last of all today, I wanted to let you know about Shelley's giveaway. You have until February 28th to sign up. You have a few options about what you'd like to choose....all from her new nature photography site. Be sure to click over and check it out!

********************************************************************************

Thank you so much for all your sweet comments on Our Love Story. I loved sharing it and loved hearing Jason's side too! A girl can never hear it enough, right? :)

Come back on my next post as I answer the questions I received on Homeschool Open House Day.

Have a great Thursday! :)

Now for the thrift finds...

Tuesday, Joy & I dropped my mom off for a Dr.'s appointment and while we waited, we stopped in Goodwill. Now, I rarely find anything there really because their prices are normally just more than I'm willing to pay. But this time, I did come out with four things....two for me and two for Joy.

These are the "for me" items. Of course, I plan to prim them up. The flag is quilted. I plan to coffee stain it. The (supposed to be) birdhouse is probably going to get a makeover as a prim wall candle holder...distressed. I'll share the finished product when I'm done. I paid $3.99 for these two.

These two books were for Joy. She spotted them right away! She loves this series of Great Illustrated Classics and I love that she loves to read them! We have several of the series, but we found these two that we didn't have and she hadn't read yet. We picked these up for 99 cents a piece. She's already about finished with David Copperfield.

After the trip to Goodwill, we had more time to spare, so we went by the Antique Gallery/Flea Market close by. I ended up only leaving with this wooden bucket for $8.

It has fruit on one side. It, too, will be painted and primmed...just not sure what color yet. I could have found more there....but my mom called ready for us to pick her up so we had to head to check out.

I really enjoy thrift shopping and especially the antique gallery, but with the cost of gas these days, I usually only go if we're in that area for something else. But it always gives me something to look forward to......and that's a good thing.
