♥ Crocheting Again ♥

Crocheting for me goes way back to when I was a little girl. I watched my mama crochet as I was growing up and I so wanted to learn as I watched her. So she taught me. As a little girl, having the fine motor skills to make it all come together wasn’t the easiest. And my mama never held a crocheting needle the “correct” way and so I learned it just like she did it. And now for the life of me, I couldn’t hold it the “proper way”. I remember practicing by making chain, after chain, after chain. Boy, was I proud of myself!

I’ve made a few afghans, shawls (back when those were in style), and even a vest. However, it’s been a few years since I’ve picked up a crocheting needle. I did teach Joy to crochet when she was younger, probably about 8 or 9, and it actually came naturally for her to hold the needle the correct way, in spite of me.

And right now in our homeschool group, we have a lady teaching a crocheting co-op class. She said adults were welcome and so I jumped right in. My hope is that I can learn to read a pattern. Everything I’ve ever done has been shown to me by someone, and I have never in my life used a pattern.

On the first day of class, she just got us started on a simple scarf with a double crochet stitch. It didn’t take me long at all to get back in the swing of crocheting and finish this scarf, which Joy has already claimed.  She grabbed it and proceeded to model all the ways she could wear it.  :)

So I’m back at it. I enjoy this. Crocheting is relaxing to me. It is something I feel comfortable doing. I like the way it feels in my fingers. I love all those beautiful yarn colors. And especially after seeing Sandra’s projects from our Sunporch Chat yesterday (all those vibrant colors), I knew I wanted to get back in the habit of crocheting.

And it's made Joy want to crochet again.  She's already started her own scarf project too.

Now knitting…..that’s a whole different story. Using two needles just seems way more complicated!

So what about you……..do you crochet, knit, sew, or stitch? Now, I know there are going to be some of you talented ladies that can do it all and I’m going to feel really inadequate. Lol! Really, I think you’re pretty awesome if you can do it all!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great day!  :)

  2. Hi Tammy, first off I want to say so glad to hear Joy is feeling much better and she looks adorable in the scarf you crocheted... I do crochet, nothing fancy just what I have been taught by others, I can not read patterns either.. I took a knitting class but couldn't get the hang of it, i do dabble in sewing, I tole paint, I love primitive and rustic decorating, cross stitch, I do alot of wool projects with appliquing, I love to punch needle, and needle felt, that would be something you both would love and not an expensive craft either. So keep us posted on all the new goodies you and Joy create and have fun.
    Blessings

  4. I have never learned to crochet although my mom does. Have you seen the crocheted dish towels? They are amazing to wash dishes with and hold up so nice. That's all I like to use.
I did learn how to do stitcheries and am learning punch needle. Both of those are fun. Love the scarf! Can't wait to see all of your creations!

  5. Cute model.... cute scarf. My great grandma taught me to crochet a granny square when I was a young girl. I made one huge granny square (about lap size) and that is as far as it goes. I don't remember how, but would love to pick up crocheting again.

  9. Crocheting runs in my family also passed down on my moms side, I also have to learn to read patterns. I can get those simple ones but always get on the phone to my mom for the harder ones and she always breaks it down for me. I learned knitting about 7 years ago from my husbands grandma she is British and knitting was passed done through their family so I wanted to learn also. Your daughter looks adorable modeling the scarf!!

  10. I just started about 2 years ago learning how to knit and crochet. I like them both. I am not great at either one, but, I know the basics. I would like to try rug hooking, but never got myself to do it. I was just looking on line about lace making. That looks fun. All those thread/yarn type activities go hand-in-hand. I love them all. Have fun!

  11. Beautiful scarf! Well done. I do a little knitting and crocheting but can't read a pattern at all. So I'm neversre if I'm doing a single crochet stitch or a double. I sort of make it up as I go, but I sew the same way. If I can see in it in my mind, then I can usually re-create it.

  12. I have crocheted a long time ago. I did enjoy it too but just haven't done it for quite some time now. I would love to learn to knit. I tried once but it was hard for me cause the crochet part of me kept trying to take over! Maybe someday I will be able to figure it out!

  13. Love the scarf...Joy wears it well! The only thing I can do is hem pants...by hand and on the sewing machine. I had to learn because we're all short! ;)

  15. I have started crocheting again too! I had pinned several dish cloth patterns and found one that I understood the instructions on (my g'ma taught me when I was 8 and it was a "watch and do what I do" type of thing too, so never really learned to read patterns) and have made 15 (almost 16) so far. LOL!! Last nite I was saying I should just keep going and make a scarf, so that is my next project after I finish this dish cloth.

  16. I sew but haven't really caught on to knitting or crocheting--other than the bit I did as a child. I'd like to learn though!

Joy is so cute and the scarf looks great too!

  17. Mama,

I love the scarf! I'm so excited that we're back into crocheting. :) It's going to be fun! Now, if we can just figure out how to make beanies. :)

    Love you! 8!

    Love,
    Joy :)

  18. I learned how to crochet a few years ago after wanting to try for many years. My sister-in-law taught me. I enjoyed it for awhile and then it got put aside. Love your scarf! Joy looks so pretty modeling it!

  20. Joy looks so happy! So glad to see her home :) I wish I had been able to get the hang of the useful art of crocheting. I just could never pick it up, so keep at it and make lots of wonderful things!

  21. Wonderful scarves. My gramma H taught me how to crochet when i was about Joy's age, however the only way I could learn was by watching her because I was a leftie and she a righty. Then my aunt taught me how to knit, but that was all I could do...never could figure out how to purl. LOL. I love to sew and stitch and taught myself. Crocheting is something you can do while watching tv. Thanks for sharing, Janice ps Joy could be a model!

My grandma taught me to crochet when I was about 8 or 9. I make baby blankets.

  23. I find crochet relaxing, when I worked I could always find time at lunch to work on something. My mom taught me too. She made me a granny square vest in pink, purple and white. So many projects not enough time!
