It's with a heavy heart and a lump in my throat that I write this. Liberty, our stray dog that we claimed as ours, was killed this weekend. Her free spirit was what brought her to us and what took her away as well.
I posted some time back about how she arrived on a broken chain and no one claimed her...thus the name Liberty or "Libby". She found her way into our hearts and it's really lonesome wihout her greetings when we pull up in the drive or when we walk outside. She always greeted us with a wagging tail and kisses. She was especially fond of Joy and Joy was especially fond of her! She followed Joy's every step and Joy called to her immediately upon stepping foot outdoors.
We always laughed at Liberty because things flying just absolutely drove her crazy! She actually caught (and killed I'm sorry to say) birds! She ran and jumped at anything flying...birds, butterflies, dragonflies...if it flew...she chased it. She even chased the water coming out of the sprinkler as it hit the side of my mom and dad's garage next door. It would entertain her for the longest, running back and forth, barking and jumping up trying to "catch" the water! In the end, it was this very thing that took her life She was chasing fireflies at dusk and jumped out onto the road in front of a car (that probably didn't even realize what they hit).
I'm thankful for a couple of things though:
1) That Joy wasn't outside at the time, but my dad was and he immediately picked Liberty up.
2) It was an instant thing....no suffering.
Joy found the perfect resting spot for Liberty, and Jason and my dad buried her there. She loved to run through the rice fields, so Joy wanted her near the field. There are daisies and morning glories that grow wild just on the other side of her. Jason made the cross and Joy and I are going to paint her name on it. Joy will also hang her collar on the cross.
Even though Liberty was only ours for just over three months, we loved her and we'll miss her so much! She offered unconditional love and added smiles to our days.
How lucky that your lives entwined ... if only for a short time, Tammy.

I am so sorry to hear about Libby! I know your hearts are broken. You and your family gave her some happiness before it was her turn to leave this world. I hope that brings you a little comfort. She looked like the happiest ittle thing. And I know that she was loved, so how special you are to her, as well as her to you.
ReplyDeleteohhh Tammy,
ReplyDeletemy heart fell when I saw the title of this post on my blogroll. we know too well over here what it feels like to lose such a special pet. it is comforting to know that she was loved so hard while she was with you..and in return, she loved you with everything she had. all you had to do was look at her face to see what a happy spirit she was! having a spot to visit her and talk to her will greatly help ease the pain in your heart...and remind Joy that those memories will always be tucked away in her heart and in her mind whenever she needs them...sending long distance hugs...
~Angie

oHHH I am so sorry! This same thing happened to us back in Jan. We lost our beloved airdale Clod we had had for 12 yrs. He got ran over to....he had a free spirit the same way liberty did. It doesnt matter how long they are with you...they touch your hearts forever. God blessed us with the wisdom to go to the Humane Society one SAturday...first time we had every been. We fell in love with a black lab. He is the most loving dog...he has healed our hearts. We have a 10 yr. old son who had never been through death before and it was soo hard on him so I feel for your Joy. Sorry this is a book but this touched a cord. Again so sorry, cherry
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about Liberty. How is Joy doing? They looked like quite the buds. Sending hugs to your family today.
ReplyDeleteOh Tammy, I am so very sorry to read what happened to Liberty. I feel awful for your father having to pick her up, but thankful that he was there to do so and that your kids were not witnesses to what happened. Poor Joy, she was obviously very attached to Liberty and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteMy heart goes out to you and your family.
I am so sorry for your family's loss.
ReplyDeleteBless you all!
You are in my prayers...

ReplyDeleteOh Tammy, I am so deeply sorry about your losing Liberty. May her sweet memories comfort you.
ReplyDeleteSending {{hugs}} your way.

This was indeed the sweetest dog and full of fun. I am sorry to know that she was killed by a car. I mean this in the kindest way...if you keep another dog and it must be kept outdoors, please consider keeping it safe in a kennel at night, out of harms way. Better yet, allow it indoors with your family when it is not supervised outdoors. I lost a much loved dog this very same way when I was Joy's age and I was completely heartbroken by it.
ReplyDeleteI can't even begin to express my sincere condolences to the loss of Libby!! I burst into tears!! She was so cute and I bet brought alot of love in her short time with you!! Thank you for taking her in and giving her love!! she knew what she was doing, LOL!!
ReplyDeleteI am so shocked to read this, truly shocked!!
I truly enjoyed you sharing pics of her!

I am SO sorry! We think of our own furbabies as our children, so I do understand. It's especially hard for the kids to deal with. I'll say a special prayer for Joy. {{hugs}}
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry Tammy; that last photo on your blog shows me a happy dog who found her forever home. You gave her the love she so needed and made her life, however short, a happy and glorious one. She will be missed. I can't stop the tears right now for your loss, so I hope I have not misspelled too much; but I know how painful it is when we lose a loved one. She will be foreve in your hearts as a beautiful beloved free spirit that you made feel the joy of being loved. Tell Joy we here are all so very sorry. Merrie and all the bully dogs.
